Durham business consultant Michael LaPaglia has announced he will run again for North Carolina Secretary of State in 2020.
LaPaglia won the Republican nomination in 2016 and earned 48% of the statewide vote in his challenge to long-time Secretary Elaine Marshall, a Democrat.
The 2016 campaign was LaPaglia’s first run for political office. On Monday, he blamed that lack of experience, low fundraising totals and a “biased media blackout” for his loss. However, he said that he earned a larger share of the vote than any previous Republican running for the position — which appears to be true.
Still, Marshall earned her sixth term as the best-performing statewide Democrat of 2016.
LaPaglia campaigns on easing the regulatory burden for North Carolina businesses.
