A rising star in the N.C. Democratic Party just announced a run for lieutenant governor.
In her announcement, N.C. Sen. Terry Van Duyn, an Asheville Democrat, says she’s the only “currently elected official” in the race. That’s a reference to the two other announced candidates in the race:
- Cal Cunningham, the one-time U.S. Senate candidate and former Demcratic state senator
- Deborah Cochran, the Republican former Mt. Airy mayor
Van Duyn will be a formidable force in the Democratic primary. She’s already one of the state’s top fundraisers on the left and will be attractive to the progressive wing of the party.
Van Duyn’s primary webpage has already switched over to lieutenant governor campaign mode.
